Let*s bring 2009 IN

To our readers 每 we sincerely express our warm appreciation as we enter 2009. Thank you for your generous support for our projects and activities in the past year.

Each year, we commit time to projects we hope will have a positive impact in one of two ways 每 to maturing of the legal services industry in China; to social development in China. Some of these activities are . . .

  • Campus programs supporting law students

Every year since founding LawInn, we have conducted career counseling seminars for law students. In 2008 we met with students at Fudan and ECUPL*s SongJiang and ChangNing campuses. Seasoned lawyers from Freshfields and MWE China Offices joined us to share their thoughts about developing a successful legal career.

  • Prompt response to the economic downturn

Responding to the current challenges faced by law office managers, LawInn organized an Office Manager Workshop. This roundtable forum provided advice and sharing of strategies to law office managers facing new HR challenges in this downturn. LawInn will continue this project in 2009.

As the downturn deepens, law firms are cutting costs, laying off staff, associates 〞 even partners 〞 as the adverse effects spread. LawInnSight November 2008 edition focused on strategies for professionals losing their jobs.

Recently, LawInn*s David Atnip shared with 35 lawyers attending the AmCham Legal Committee meeting our view of the market conditions for legal services in China.

  • Publish legal market salary information 每 benchmark compensation trends

LawInn published in March 2008 a 2007 legal salary survey 每 our third year to produce this report. For the first time we used on-line data collection. New salary groups for IP Lawyer, Office Manager and Translator were added. We are currently working to produce the 2008 salary survey to be more informative with Allowance & Benefits information.

  • CSR support 每 5.12 earthquake relief

In 2008, LawInn continued sponsorship of charity events. We were pleased to support Charyou, a Chinese grass roots charity, to gain an NGO registration. Charyou organized 24 volunteer events during 2008.

The extraordinary response of so many individuals, groups, and enterprises who donated time, resources and money after the 5.12 earthquake amazed us. In the June 2008 edition of LawInnSight we recognized the earthquake relief responses of a few law firms. LawInn*s Nick Zhang flew to Sichuan twice after the earthquake. He was recognized as One of Ten outstanding youth in the 5.12 Earthquake.

In the cold of winter all of us are reflecting on the impact of these uncertain economic times. With calm focus and positive action to prepare we believe opportunities can be found and we can all find our way through this period. No matter good fortune, or not, we are walking in the path of 2009. Let*s bring 2009 IN with love and hope.
