Louis Meng, formerly a consultant with DLA Piper, joined K&L Gates where he will be a partner in the firm's Shanghai office. Meng will boost the firm's corporate, M&A and securities practice in the Shanghai office, which opened in April 2008.

Former Paul Hastings real estate partner in Hong Kong, Mark Brooks, joined Morrison & Foerster. Brooks expects to incorporate his existing PE and real estate work in India with MoFo*s focus in China and Japan.

Gide Loyrette Nouel advised Veolia Transport regarding the establishing a joint venture with Nanjing Zhongbei, a PRC company listed on the Shenzhen exchange with a majority ownership by Nanjing Municipality. Hong Kong office manager Rebecca Silli led the team assisting Veolia.

Miller Canfield opened an office in Shanghai. Corporate and securities lawyer, Thomas Appleman, will lead the new office. He is joined by life sciences lawyer, Weisun Rao, PhD., who specializes in patent law and intellectual property transactions.

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman*s China Reception was held in its new Shanghai office on December 11. Pillsbury opened a small Shanghai office in 2007. In 2008, Pillsbury acquired Thelen*s China practice, a group of approximately 20 lawyers.

Jin Mao Law Firm celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a reception at the Shanghai Art Museum on December 18. Established in December 1988, Jin Mao is a leading law firm in China with recognized experience in foreign investment and corporate matters.

Allen & Overy held a Scholarship Awards Presentation Ceremony in Beijing on December 4. The firm awarded more than 60 law students grants at BeijingUniversity, TsinghuaUniversity, The University of International Economics & Trade and China University of Political Science & Law in Beijing, as well as FudanUniversity and East China University of Political Science & Law in Shanghai.

Baker & McKenzie organized a Christmas party for Qing Cong Quan students and their parents in Shanghai on December 21. Guests donated RMB 4,138 and RMB 3,645 was raised in a charity sale. Qing Cong Quan is a non-profit school for autistic children in Shanghai.

As we move into 2009 anticipating the challenges of an uncertain economy and legal market, we take this look back reviewing some partner moves in greater China during 2008.

Search 1:  Faegre & Benson

At the beginning of the year, Peter Neumann, executive partner of Faegre & Benson Shanghai, left to open Greenberg Traurig*s new office in Shanghai. In February, Faegre & Benson announced Baker & McKenzie*s John Grobowski joined the firm as managing partner of the Shanghai office.

Search 2:  Allen & Overy

2008 was a challenging year for Allen & Overy. The firm lost 8 partners in greater China. One partner joined.

  • In May, William Ho, partner in Allen & Overy*s Shanghai office, formed his own boutique firm - William KK Ho & Co in Hong Kong.
  • Mark Roppel, Managing Partner of Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft in Beijing left to join Allen & Overy's Shanghai corporate practice in September.
  • In October, seven corporate partners in Allen & Overy's Hong Kong left to join Latham & Watkins. The group included: Asia corporate chief Michael Liu and China group head Kenneth Chan.

Search 3:  DLA Piper

DLA Piper experienced an active year in partner moves in with three joiners and two partners leaving.

 Search 4:  O'Melveny & Myers

In a change from the customary strong employee loyalty to the firm, O'Melveny & Myers lost a senior partner.

Search 5:  Heller Ehrman

Heller Ehrman dissolved following the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy filing and partners scattered.

  • In September, Joseph Cha, head of Heller Ehrman*s Beijing office, and Ying Li, Heller partner who led the firm's China business practice, joined Proskauer Rose as partners.
  • In September, Eversheds announced the appointment of corporate partner Nick Seddon in Asia. Seddon had joined the Hong Kong office of Heller Ehrman as regional managing partner in spring 2008.
  • In December, Martin Downey joined Blank Rome Solicitors & Notariesin Hong Kong. Downey was head of Heller Ehrman Asian dispute resolution practice.

Search 6:  Clifford Chance vs. Norton Rose

Each firm lost one partner to the other.

  • In May, Clifford Chance announced asset finance lawyer Simon Briscoe would join the firm*s Singapore office.Briscoe moved to Clifford Chance from Norton Rose Singapore.
  • In June, Justin Wilson moved to the Shanghai office of Norton Rose as a partner. Wilson joined from Clifford Chance Shanghai where he was counsel specializing in cross-border M&A, private equity and inward investment into China.

Search 7:  Lovells vs. White & Case

Lovells and White & Case also played even.

Search 8:  Simmons & Simmons vs. Minter Ellison

Minter Ellison lost two partners to Simmons & Simmons.

Search 9:  PRC law firms

In 2008, Martin Hu, founding partner of Boss & Yong, established his own boutique law firm.

The day after a guilty verdict was recorded against his client, a lawyer rushed to the judge's chambers. He demanded that the case be reopened.
