Call to action

Sustainable development; environmental protection; low-carbon economy.  These concepts are much on our minds.  Economic recession; earthquakes〞※5.12§ in Wenchuan and recently in Yushu; drought in southwest China; windstorms in the north.  Many people are suffering.

The Expo theme 每 Better City, Better Life 每 prompts us to consider what actions we can take to make a positive contribution.  Lawyers are in a position to set examples in the society.  We take this opportunity to focus on a few in the legal circle who are taking action.

Motivation

Volunteer lawyers we spoke to were mostly low key, their motivation simple and pure.  ※The pro bono work is a part of my life.  To be honest, I have never asked myself why I am doing this,§ says Mr. George Ji, Senior Associate in CMS Bureau Francis Lefebvre.  Mr. Ji contributes to education in poor areas in southwest China.

※Society is a big family.  If I have the ability to lend a hand to those who need help, why not do so?§ Ms. Claire Sun from R.R. Sun Law Firm says.  ※I*m happy to contribute my share.  It is my personal responsibility now.§

With sufficient resources of knowledge and financial ability, lawyers may be encouraged to support pro bono work because they are, to some extent, in a better position than common people.  Ms. Christina Wu, Marketing Manager with AllBright Law Offices, notes that ※Lawyers can contribute unique knowledge to volunteer work; such as helping establish operating systems and supervision systems to ensure transparency.§

Benefit

※Happiness§ is a key word lawyers use when describing their feelings about volunteer work.  Ms. Luanne Lu, Senior Associate with DLA Piper, says, ※I get happiness from helping others.§  She described her 12 days as a volunteer in Tibet teaching Tibetan children in a summer camp.  It*s her special experience.

Volunteering can build skills, and contribute to personal development.  ※Different voluntary work requires different skills, including spirit and practice,§ Ms. Sun notes. ※The preparation work and practice help us strengthen legal and non-legal expertise.§

Ms. Lynn Zheng, Office Administrator of MWE China Law Offices notes, ※Lawyers doing pro bono work also get opportunity to practice interpersonal skills and build up team spirit.§

Power of action

The power of action is strong.  ※People appreciate even if you contribute only once your time or money,§ says Mr. Ji.  Though support from one individual may be limited, the action definitely impacts positively on others.  Ms. Sun told us that from a very small beginning her volunteer team grows bigger and bigger.

More law firms in China are planning and conducting pro bono projects.  They encourage, and support, employees to get involved.  According to Ms. Zheng, MWE China just this year started planning pro bono projects.  The firm will co-operate with Cherished Dream Charity Foundation.  She said that most of the young attorneys are very active.

Employers play an important role in supporting lawyers* pro bono work.  Ms. Amy Chen, a lawyer from CMS Bureau Francis Lefebvre, impresses us.  She is currently working on a 4-month pro bono project in Sichuan Province.  She asked for non-paid leave to volunteer as a teacher.  She describes in her blog (http://blog.sina.com.cn/allforbetterlife), how her firm and colleagues provide strong support by donating clothes and toys.  What is more, her colleagues are raising money for the small fund set up by Amy.

Do your bit

We notice that MWE China put the words, ※Think Green - Please consider the environment before printing this email§ into their email signature block.  It*s a small thing, but laudable.  No matter how busy we are, we can each do our bit.  First awareness, and then many small actions, soon add up to a green earth.  Here*s a short list to start.

  • Set recycle bin for used batteries in the office
  • Print double-sided
  • Turn off the lights for 30 minutes at lunch time each work day
  • Forbid disposable chopsticks
  • Donate to charity
  • Sort garbage

We appreciate and advocate the power of action.  Lawyers, help the earth, please take action!

Some lawyers are discussing setting up a young lawyer volunteer association.  We absolutely support this idea.  We encourage young lawyers who are keen on volunteer work to share and discuss with us.  If you are interested, please contact Jolie Hu at jolie.hu@charyou.org

Fun

A lawyer was new in town.  He was invited to a dinner honoring the local judge. "My goodness," he said aloud to the lady seated next to him, "That bald, fat, ugly little man is Judge Smith!?"

The lady glared at him with fire in her eyes. "Young man," she said, "Do you know who I am?"

"No," replied the newcomer.

"I am Mrs. Smith!"

"I see," said the lawyer. "And do you, Mrs. Smith, know who I am?"

"I most certainly do not!" said the Judge's wife.

"Thank goodness!" said the lawyer, and he hurriedly left the room.
