Beijing-based corporate lawyer Greg Liu has been elected as a partner of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison . Liu is a member of the firm's M&A practice group, with an individual practice focusing on M&A, le vera ged private equity transactions and securities, with clients particularly in the financial services and IT sectors.

Corporate lawyer David Lin has left US firm O'Melveny & Myers to join Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe as a partner in the firm's Hong Kong office. The eighth new partner in Orrick's China offices in 2007, Lin will focus on capital markets and private equity. As well as the new partners, Orrick has added 20 additional lawyers this year, bringing its headcount to 75 lawyers and legal professionals across its Beijing , Hong Kong, and Shanghai offices.

Bryan Cave announced an affiliation with Alpha & Leader , a Chinese law firm in the corporate and finance sectors with offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai . Headquartered in Guangzhou , Alpha & Leader has more than 100 professionals who advise many of China 's domestic banks, as well as U.S. commercial and investment banks and multinational corporations.

Growing Pro Bono Commitment in China

Pro Bono is a phrase derived from Latin meaning "for the public good." It is used to designate legal or other professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment, as a public service.

Pro Bono is part of foreign law firms'(especially US and UK firms) tradition and culture. E.g. Globally, average number of pro bono hours per lawyer in Paul Hastings in 2006 is 41 hours .

Nowadays, China has seen growing Pro Bono commitment from such international law firms:

November 2007 Paul Hastings partnered with Project Hope to provide direct support for the construction of a new elementary school in Jiangxi province. Named the Paul Hastings Hope Elementary school , the modernized classroom facilities serve over 300 students from 5 villages in the county. Paul Hastings Shanghai Office Chair, Mitch Dudek , was appointed as the honorary principal of the school.
Additionally, Paul Hastings' Shanghai office has formed a partnership with Fudan University to provide the University with legal advice on a pro bono basis.

August 2006 Two volunteers (Ms. Frances JI and Ms. Lu Mingming) from DLA Piper UK LLP experienced a 10-day teaching assignment in Xigaze , Tibet Autonomous Region. This Teaching Assignment in Tibet was set up by the Oriental Morning Post newspaper and DLA Piper UK LLP .

Meanwhile, a number of reputable domestic firms have participated in pro bono works in a different angle.

July 2007 King & Wood hosted a roundtable discussion on public interest law in China with O'Melveny & Myers LLP , Shearman & Sterling LLP and two public interest firms.  This is the first time law firms and public interest firms met and discussed the roadmap for public interests programs in China . 

October 2006 Jun He Law Firm joined with six multinationals and two government-backed non-profit organizations including McKinsey, Deloitte and, Ogilvy, Novartis and Motorola to establish Non-Profit Partners Foundation (NPP) , the first philanthropy venture foundation in China. NPP's mission is to provide support to non-profit organizations in China in three primary areas: 1) providing professional services on a pro bono basis in the areas of management, finance, accounting, law, and marketing; 2) multi-year financial support dedicated to capability-building based on the grantee's performance; and 3) fund-raising assistance.
